Letter Grade Scale

The letter grade scale is useful for faculty who do not want to give students a numeric grade for certain assignments. Instead of entering a numeric value, the faculty will choose a letter grade from a drop down list box. The letter grade corresponds with 1 distinct numeric value which is used to calculate the cumulative grade.

Tip: If you use the letter grade scale, it's good practice to give faculty a copy of the letter grades with their corresponding numeric value. What you think of as an "A" might not be what a teacher thinks of as an "A" and it will affect the cumulative score.

  1. From the persona menu, select Academics.

  2. Under Grades, select Grading setup followed by Gradebook settings.

  3. Under Letter grade scales, select + Add scale.

  4. Enter a Scale Description. This is the name of the scale. It will be viewable by faculty when they are choosing the scale for an assignment type in their gradebook configuration.

  5. Enter the values for the first letter in the letter scale.

    1. Letter: The label that the faculty will choose as the grade.

    2. Numeric value: The numeric equivalent to the letter grade. This value will be used in the cumulative grade calculation.

    3. Min. score: The minimum parameter of the letter value. This is for informational purposes and is not used in the calculation.

    4. Max. score: The maximum parameter of the letter. This is for informational purposes and is not used in the calculation.

  6. Select + Add another to add more letter grades as needed.

  7. Select Save.

  1. Select the context menu beside a letter grade scale, then Edit scale.

    Note: To completely remove a grade scale, select Delete scale. This option will only appear if no faculty have used this scale yet.

  2. Make your changes, then select Save.
