Create Extra Credit Assignments in Gradebook

Teachers can create extra credit assignments to allow students to improve their cumulative grade without risk. Extra credit assignments only increase a student’s grade and never lower it.

Mark an assignment as extra credit

  1. Go to the assignment setup.

  2. In Advanced settings, select Mark as extra credit.

  3. On the Basic setup tab, ensure the following settings are configured:

  4. Max points is greater than 0.

  5. Add to cumulative grade is enabled.

For more information about creating assignments, see Add assignments.

How extra credit affects grades

  • Extra credit assignments cannot lower a student’s cumulative grade.

  • If a student does not complete an extra credit assignment, their grade is not affected.

  • Extra credit points are not added directly to the cumulative grade.

    • Instead, extra credit is included based on the gradebook calculation method selected for the class.

For examples of how extra credit is calculated, see Gradebook calculations.

Requirements and limitations

  • At least one non-extra credit assignment must be graded in the assignment type category for the marking period.

  • Extra credit assignments must:

    • Have a Max points value greater than 0

    • Be included in the cumulative grade

Key considerations for extra credit assignments

  • Use extra credit to provide opportunities for grade improvement without penalizing students.

  • Verify assignment settings to ensure the assignment contributes to the gradebook as expected.

  • Review your gradebook calculation method to understand how extra credit is applied.
