LockDown Browser Student Experience

LockDown BrowserTM is a custom browser that deters cheating by restricting student access to other websites, applications, and tools during online assessments.

When LockDown Browser is enabled:

  • the assessment cannot be accessed with other browsers.

  • the assessment is displayed in full screen mode and cannot be minimized.

  • browser menu and toolbar actions are limited to Back, Forward, Refresh, and Stop.

  • messaging, screen-sharing, virtual machine, and remote desktop applications are blocked.

  • print and screen capture functions are disabled.

  • copying and pasting content to or from the assessment is prohibited.

  • right-click menus, function keys, keyboard shortcuts, and task switching are disabled.

  • students cannot exit the assessment without submitting it for grading.

Installing LockDown Browser

Students must install LockDown Browser before they can access questions on their assessment.

Note: If your school requires administrator level privileges to install applications on student devices, an administrator can access the LockDown Browser installation files in Core, Settings, Integration settings, LockDown Browser.

Student installation

  1. Student opens their assessment as usual and the introduction page indicates that LockDown Browser is required.

  2. Student selects Install LockDown Browser and chooses the appropriate install file for their device.

    • If a student selects Begin test and attempts to start the assessment without installing LockDown Browser, they will receive an error.

  3. The download page detects the student's operating system, and the student selects Install Now.

    • If LockDown Browser is already installed, the student can select Test LockDown Browser to open the browser and confirm it is working.

    • LockDown Browser only needs to be installed once per device.

Taking assessments in LockDown Browser

Note: You cannot access LockDown Browser while impersonating a student.

  1. Once LockDown Browser is installed, the student selects Begin test.

  2. If any blocked applications are open, the student is prompted to Close applications and Continue or they can select Exit LockDown Browser to exit without taking their assessment.

  3. LockDown Browser opens, and the student completes the assessment.

Students can select the + icon at the top of the browser to open the Insert Symbol dialogue box.

If Enable virtual calculator is selected for the assessment, students select the calculator icon to open the calculator.

  4. When finished, the student selects Submit, then selects Close to exit LockDown Browser.

If a student opens a submitted assessment to review their results, the results page opens in LockDown Browser.
