Add Assignments (New)

Faculty can add new assignments, assessments, and graded discussions, as well as copy or import existing assignments. Faculty members evaluate student performance and provide feedback through their Gradebooks and Grade Assignments.

Note: This new assignment creation workflow and the new assignment grading page become available only after your administrator enables the New Faculty Assignment Experience. See Assignments for the legacy workflow.

Assignment Creation Preferences

To optimize assignment creation, set your assignment creation defaults in Preferences.

  1. In Faculty, select My Day, then Assignment Center.

    OR

    Select Classes, choose a class, then select Assignments.

  2. In list view, select More, then Preferences.

    In calendar view, select Preferences just above the calendar.

  3. On the Assignment creation tab, set your defaults for the following assignment settings:

    • Add to gradebook default: Selected or unselected.

    • Add to cumulative grade default: Selected or unselected.

    • Publish grade default: Selected or unselected.

    • Assignment notification: Selected or unselected.

    • File submission: Select No assignment submission, In-system submission, or On paper submission only.

    • Evaluation method: Select Total points, Mastery, or Mastery and total points.

      Note: Evaluation method default is only available if your school uses Mastery.

    • Due date and times: Base due dates and times off of class meetings or manually specify due dates and times.

Add an assignment

  1. In Faculty, select  My Day, then Assignment Center.

  2. In list view, select +Add, then Quick assignment.

    In calendar view, select +Quick assignment.

  1. In Faculty, select Classes, then choose a class.

  2. Select the Assignments tab.

  3. In list view, select +Add, then Quick assignment.

    In calendar view, select +Quick assignment.

  1. In Faculty, select Classes, then choose a class.

  2. Select Launch gradebook.

  3. Select +Add, then Quick assignment.

Basic setup

Basic setup includes the most frequently used and required assignment settings.

Under Details:

  1. Enter the assignment Title and optional Description.

  2. Select an Assignment type.

    Tip: (GB) at the end of an assignment type indicates it is included in your gradebook calculation.

  3. To upload a file from your computer or device, select Attach file.

    If your school utilizes Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive integration, select the appropriate option to upload files from those drive folders.

    Tip: Update the file name before uploading if needed.

  4. To add a link, select Add link, enter a Description and URL, then select Apply.

Under Publishing options:

Section

  • When creating an assignment from a class section or gradebook, all class sections of the course that you teach are automatically selected.

  • When creating an assignment from the Assignment Center, select the checkbox for each class section that will share the assignment.

  • Use Select sections to add additional classes.

Assigned and Due

Set the Assigned and Due dates and times for each class section individually, or select Bulk-edit selected to set the dates and times for all selected class sections at once.

For Due date, select:

  • Next meeting: the assignment is due the next time the class meets after the Assigned date and time.

  • Specific date: Select the calendar icon to chose a date. A red dot indicates which days a class meets.

For Due time, select:

  • Start of class: Start time of the class meeting on the selected Due date.

  • End of class: End time of the next class meeting.

  • Specific time: Select the clock icon to choose a time.

Note: Specific date and Specific time are automatically selected if a class has no meetings.

Assigned to

By default, assignments are assigned to the Full section of students.

Assign an assignment to specific students:

  1. Under Assigned to, select the Edit icon next to Full section.

  2. Mark Selected students.

  3. Select the students.

  4. Select Save.

Publish

Select when the assignment is visible to students:

  • Now: Immediately visible.

  • Assigned date: Visible on the Assigned date and time.

  • No: Not visible.

Warning: Student submissions will be lost if an assignment with In-system submissions enabled is unpublished and then republished.

Under Evaluation:

  1. Select Add to gradebook if the assignment should be included in your gradebook.

  2. To use a rubric:

    • Select +Rubric, choose a rubric, then select Apply.

    • Selecting a rubric fills in the Max points for the assignment.

    • Select the rubric link to view the rubric details.

      Note: To use a rubric, you must have at least one rubric in your Rubric bank. For more information, see Rubrics.

  3. Enter the Max points (must be greater than 0).

  4. To publish the grade to students, select Publish grade.

  5. To include the grade in the cumulative grade calculations for the class, select Add to cumulative grade.

Note: If your school uses Mastery, we recommend using our Faculty Guide to Mastery Learning to create your Mastery assignments.

If your school uses Mastery, select the edit icon under Method to select an evaluation method:

  • Total score

  • Mastery

  • Mastery and total score

If Mastery or Mastery and total score is selected, complete these additional steps under Evaluation:

  • Formative: Enable if the assignment should not be included in the Mastery calculation.

  • Courses: Use the edit icon to associate at least one course.

  • Skills to evaluate: Add Content-area and/or Transferable skills to the assignment.

    Note: A skill must be associated with all selected course to be available in Skills to evaluate.

Select how students submit the assignment.

Select the Submission type: 

  • No assignment submission: Students do not turn in an online or paper submission for the assignment.

    • Your administrator determines which status is applied to assignments that do not require a submission when the due date and time passes - Complete, Overdue, or To do.

  • On paper submission only: Students may only turn in a hard copy of the assignment.

    • When the due date passes, the assignment status automatically updates to Overdue until the assignment is graded or marked as Collected.

    Tip: If students can choose between submitting their assignment on paper or uploading an in-system file submission, choose In-system submission.

  • In-system submission: Students upload a file submission for the assignment.

    • Select the Number of submitted files allowed per student.

    • Select Allow resubmit until due date if students should be able to resubmit files for the assignment.

    • If your school uses the Google Drive integration, you can specify the file types allowed for submission.

    Note: Many file types are supported. For more information, see Supported File Types, Embed, iFrame & Script Code

  • Turnitin LTI 1.1: If applicable, students submit their assignment through Turnitin.

Advanced settings

Abbreviation (optional): In gradebook settings, you choose to display assignment titles or abbreviations. By default, the first 5 characters of your assignment Title are added as the Abbreviation no abbreviation is entered.

Mark as extra credit: Enable if the assignment should count as extra credit.

Note: Extra credit assignments will not negatively impact a student's grade. Any extra credit points awarded are included in cumulative grade calculations. For more information, see Extra Credit.

Assignment factor: Defaults to 1. Factor determines how many times an assignment is counted in grade calculations.

Enable Send notification to send an "Assignment added" notification. Users must subscribe to the Assignment added notification to receive it.

If your school has enabled any LTI 1.1 learning tool providers, select an Associated learning tool and fill in any additional fields if needed.

By default, Single instance of this assignment is selected.

Create multiple instances of an assignment, such as daily reading or weekly quizzes. After saving, edit individual instances as needed.

  1. Select Multiple instances of this assignment.

  2. Under Date range, select the From and To dates when the assignment instances will occur.

  3. Under Due, select the day or days of the week the assignment instances are due.

  4. Under Assigned, select Assigned on date due if each instance is assigned on the same date that it is due. Or select Assigned before due date and enter the number of Days before due date that the instances are assigned.

  5. Enter the Time assigned.

  6. Select View/edit instances to review all instances of the assignment that will be created. 

    • Update the Assigned or Due dates and times for individual instance as needed.

    • Select the delete icon to remove any instances you do not want to create.

  7. When finished, select Save or Save and add another.

Manage existing assignments

List view of Assignment Center or class Assignments page:

  • Update the Publish status directly from the list view.

  • To edit other details, select the context menu next to the assignment, then Edit.

In calendar view of the Assignment Center or class Assignments page:

  • Select the assignment tile (not the assignment title) to open the editing options.

From gradebook::

  • Select the down arrow in the assignment's header row, then select Edit assignment details.

Deleting an assignment removes all student submissions, files, Google Drive links, submitted text, grades, comments, and evaluations related to the assignment. If an assignment is included in gradebook calculations, those calculations will be updated automatically.

Delete an assignment from ist view of the Assignment Center or class Assignments page: 

  1. Select the context menu next to the assignment, then select Delete.

  2. Select the course section(s) you want to delete the assignment from.

  3. Select Yes, delete for the selected sections to complete the deletion.

Delete an assignment via gradebook

  1. In your gradebook, locate the assignment in the header row.

  2. Select the down arrow below the assignment information in the header row, then select Delete.
