Chart Health Advisor
Note: Don't see this yet? Chart Health Advisor is in Limited Availability (LA) and releasing in waves. During the LA, we'll review and implement participant feedback to prepare for general availability.
From General ledger, Overview, open Chart Health Advisor to assess the health of your chart organizer structure. Use the advisor to identify issues that affect daily operations and to recognize when larger changes may be required. Chart Health Advisor uses insights to identify conditions that slow reporting, increase miscoding risk, or contribute to audit findings, and then guides you through resolution steps in Financial Edge NXT.
Why Chart Health Advisor Matters
Over time, you may inherit or accumulate complex account segment structures. Even when those structures remain functional, they can introduce ongoing challenges such as slow reports, inconsistent coding, and reduced confidence in financial data. Use the advisor to:
-
Identify specific structural issues in your chart and understand their root causes.
-
Resolve supported issues that you can correct today to improve reporting accuracy and reduce operational friction.
-
Know when structural complexity indicates the need for remediation planning.
Understand Your Chart Health Score
Your chart health score is a composite rating from zero to 100 that reflects the overall condition of your account structure. To view the most recent analysis results, select Refresh health score.
Tip: You can refresh the results every 30 minutes.
Score Components
The chart health score evaluates multiple factors.
-
Dormant accounts — Dormant accounts are full account strings with no activity for 12 or more months and a zero balance. Lock these accounts to reduce clutter, simplify reporting, and improve long‑term maintainability.
Note: Dormancy is calculated using posted general ledger distributions only. Accounts that use a Do not post subledger workflow are expected to appear dormant and do not indicate an issue.
-
Other dormant records — Lock other dormant records, such as funds, account codes, and projects, to further reduce clutter in your chart. Maintaining only active records helps streamline reporting, improves usability, and makes the chart easier to manage over time.
Score Bands
Chart Health Advisor displays your score with a status band to help you quickly assess urgency.
-
Healthy — Scores from 80 through 100 indicate a well‑maintained chart structure with minimal issues.
-
Moderate — Scores from 60 through 79 indicates you should make changes to improve reporting and reduce coding errors.
-
At risk — Scores below 59 indicate significant issues within the chart structure.
Chart Structure Facts
Chart structure facts provides insight into your account segment architecture. These details don't affect your chart health score, but explain why specific issues occur and help you understand the scope of remediation effort. Chart structure facts includes:
-
Number of active records — The total count of active records, such as accounts, projects, or classes, in your chart.
-
Segment usage analysis — Identification of segments with low usage that contribute to structural complexity.
Know When to Consider Remediation
Organizations with five or more segments and low‑usage segments often see declining chart health because of structural complexity. In these environments, reporting slowness, miscoding errors, and audit findings usually result from inherited chart design limitations that can't be resolved in Financial Edge NXT.
Use chart health trends and structure facts to evaluate the scope of changes required. These help you decide when adjustments you manage internally are sufficient and when formal remediation planning is more effective. When a formal plan is the better option, consider engaging Blackbaud Professional Services to perform a health check and support remediation planning. Professional Services helps assess structural constraints and guides a coordinated remediation approach when internal changes aren't enough.
