The account structure is based on segments. Your organization may require a simple structure of two to four segments or a complex structure of five to ten segments. By default, the first segment in a General Ledger account is always the fund code, but you can move it to any position. The second segment, also by default, is the account code.
Follow these guidelines when defining your account number structure:
-
The account structure must have at least two segments—fund and account code. Segments can be in any order.
-
Account numbers can consist of up to 10 segments of varying length. Each segment can represent numbers, text, or a table, except for account codes. Account codes must be numeric. The short description you define when you create the table determines the length of table-type segments.
-
Only the account code segment can exceed more than six characters in length. Additional segments can be between 1 and 6 characters in length
-
The maximum length of an account number is 30 characters, including separators. Separators identify a break between segments. For example, in the account number 01-111100, the separator is the hyphen (-). Separators cannot follow the last segment of an account number.
