Create a URL Alias

  1. Make note of the incoming URL (including keyword) from which you want to redirect. For example: http://www.myorganization.org/alaska

  2. On the Reports and Tools page for the desired Web site, click URL Aliases under Design/Setup. The URL Aliases index page displays.

  3. Click the New URL Alias button (green plus sign). The URL Alias dialog displays.

  4. Specify a Target Folder, a Keyword, and a URL. These will be the properties of the new URL alias.

    URL Alias Field Description
Target Folder Select the folder you want to appear as part of the "vanity" URL alias (Incoming URL). If your Incoming URL does not specify a folder, select the root folder.
    Keyword

The keyword you enter here forms the last part of the URL alias. It can include a file extension, like .html. Keywords are case-sensitive and must be URL-friendly, with no spaces or special characters. For example:

    • Alaska

    • alaska.jsp

    • Donate.html

    • donate.asp

Warning: Make sure the keyword does not match any actual content within the specified folder. If you enter a keyword such as Habitats or donate.html, and there is an actual Habitats folder or a donate.html file at that location, you will effectively block site visitors from viewing that folder's index page or the donate.html page. Instead, visitors will be automatically re-directed to the alias Destination URL.

    URL

Enter the Destination URL where you want the Incoming URL to be redirected. This can be either an internal URL (same Web site) or an external URL, such as http://www.blackbaud.com. An internal Destination URL can be either full-path or relative-path:

    http:// my.organization.org/issues/123/abc.html

    /issues/123/abc.html

    /issues/123/ (Will re-direct to the 123 folder's index page)

An external Destination URL must be full-path. For example:

    https://donate.secureserver.org/campaigns/123.jsp

    http://www.senate.gov/pagelayout/senators/one_item_and_teasers/alaska.htm

  5. Click OK. The new re-direct appears in the URL Aliases list.

  6. Test the link by entering th incoming URL in a new browser window, and press the Enter key.
