Membership Standings
Standings indicate the current status of memberships and can be used to help manage relationships with their members. On a constituent's record, their current standing appears in the profile information or under Membership.
Note: In the database view, a member has a standing of New when you first add them to a program, and the standing changes to Active when you save the membership.
Active members are currently involved in a membership program. To keep these members engaged, thank them for their support and demonstrate the value they receive from the membership. To continue the relationship, make it easy for members to renew, and express an urgency to renew when the current membership nears its expiration.
Lapsed members were active but didn't renew when their memberships expired. Members may choose to not renew for multiple reasons, from personal finances or hectic schedules to a lack of motivation about the membership program. You may want to personally contact these members to follow up and determine how to engage them again. However, to not become a nuisance and to better focus your effort, be prepared to drop lapsed members at a certain point after their memberships expire, such as three renewal notices or two months.
Tip: In the database view, you can configure warnings to indicate when memberships lapse for a specific amount of time and set when to automatically drop lapsed memberships.
Dropped members were active but chose to cancel their memberships or didn't renew when they lapsed. Retain your history of these members and make it easy for them to rejoin, such as when their personal finances improve.
