Constituency Variations

Constituencies are handled by Blackbaud Infinity in three ways:

Table-based system constituencies

User-defined constituencies

Data-determined system constituencies

For information about constituencies from the perspective of the application user interface, see the Constituents Guide.

Table-based system constituencies

Table-based system constituency information loaded into Blackbaud Data Warehouse with the ETL process includes:

From the application, you can manually add table-based system constituencies to a constituent. For example you can add a the Staff constituency to an Individual constituent. This kind of constituency information is contained in a table in the transactional database that is accessed by the ETL process and conveyed to the data warehouse database. A Blackbaud Data Warehouse database contains a table called DIM_CONSTITUENCY and one called FACT_CONSTITUENCY.

The Constituency dimension contains information about constituencies. This includes user defined constituencies as well as system defined ones (Volunteer, Board Member, Fundraiser, Group Member, Staff, and Committee).

The Constituency fact associates constituents to constituencies. This includes user defined constituencies as well as system defined ones.

User-defined constituencies

From the application, you can manually add user-defined system constituencies to a constituent. User-defined constituencies are defined alongside table-based system constituencies. A flag indicates whether the constituency is user defined.

Data-determined system constituencies

You cannot manually add data-determined system constituencies to a constituent. These constituencies exist based on some criteria. For example Major donors are determined by a monetary giving threshold configured from the Constituents functional area in the application. The application infers that a constituent has the Major donor constituency from the constituent's giving history. Some data-determined system constituencies are not loaded into Blackbaud Data Warehouse by the ETL process and others are inferred by the ETL process and loaded.
