Assignment Statuses

Students can use assignment statuses to determine what work they still need to complete, if work is past due, and what work teachers have graded.

Statuses include:

  • To do: default status for all assignments.

  • In progress

  • Completed 

  • Graded: Assignment is Graded once the teacher commits a grade, skill evaluation, or comment.

  • Overdue

  • Paused: Used for assessments only.

Note: Any assignment that is marked as "Missing" will display as "Missing" in the student Assignment Center, regardless of the assignment status.

In the calendar view of the student Assignment Center, the assignment status determines the background color of the assignment tile:

  • Blue: In progress, To do, or Paused

  • Green: Completed or Graded

  • Red: Overdue or Missing

Assignment status behaviors vary based on the assignment submission method. For all submission methods, the following behaviors apply:

  • All assignments default to To do status.

  • A teacher marking an assignment as "Collected" updates the status to Completed.

  • Graded status indicates a teacher has committed a grade, comment, or skill rating for the assignment. A student cannot update their assignment status after it is set to Graded.

  • Students cannot manually update the assignment status.

  • In progress: In progress is used when text is saved or file uploaded, but the assignment is not submitted. In progress is also used when a student or teacher triggers a resubmission for the assignment.

  • Overdue: Assignment set to Overdue when the due date/time passes without a submission.

  • Completed: Completed is set by the student submitting the assignment or by the teacher marking it "Collected."

  • Students can manually change the assignment status unless the status is Graded.

  • In progress: set manually by the student.

  • Overdue: Assignment set to Overdue when the due date/time passes if the teacher has not marked the assignment "Collected" and the student has not manually set the assignment to "Completed."

  • Completed: set manually by the student or by the teacher marking the assignment "Collected".

Note: Unlike other assignment submission methods, Grading Managers can select what status is applied to assignments that do not require a submission when the due date/time passes. They can choose between setting these assignments to To do, Completed, or Overdue. For more information, see Assignment Settings

  • Students can manually set the status.

  • In progress: set manually by the student.

  • Completed: set manually by the student or by the teacher marking the assignment "Collected".

  • Overdue: set manually by the student or when the due date/time passes based on the option selected by your administrator in Assignment settings.

  • Students can manually change the assignment status.

  • In progress: set manually by the student.

  • Overdue: set automatically when the due date/time passes if the student has not submitted the assignment.

  • Completed: set when the student submits the assignment or the teacher marks the assignment "Collected."
