Learning Tools

Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) is a standard for securely and easily integrating learning applications, known as learning tools, with learning management systems (LMS). LTI is a single sign-on (SSO) integration, so users who are impersonating someone else will not be able to launch a third-party tool, such as Turnitin. LTI is also limited to Academic groups.

Platform Managers can configure learning tools from third-party tool providers and review usage details for each tool in Core > Settings > Integration Settings > Learning tools. Filter the list of learning tools by Status or LTI version.

Note: Contact your tool provider vendor to obtain the necessary credentials you'll need for set up and to determine if they support LTI version 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3. You should not enable multiple versions of an LTI tool at the same time.

Select Learning Tool Provider Type

  1. In Core, select Settings > Integration Settings > Learning tools.

  2. Select +Add

  3. Choose from the following Provider types:

The remaining setup options will vary by the Provider type selected. Detailed instructions are also available for Edpuzzle and Google Assignments.

Note: Contact your tool provider to determine if they support LTI version 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3.

  1. After selecting Other provider, select LTI 1.1 tool.

  2. Enter the Provider name and optional Description.

  3. Select the status, Active or Inactive.

  4. Available on: Select the features where the learning tool will be available.

    • Topics: A learning tool content type will be available for teachers to add to their Topics. For more information, see Learning Tools for Topics.

    • Assignments: Enables the learning tool on Assignments. With Assignments enabled, Returns Grades is enabled by default and will need to be turned off if grades should not be sent to the learning tool.

    • Display settings: Choose how the learning tool displays for teachers and students from assignments.

      • Display in new window: The tool launches in a new browser window.

      • Display in iFrame: The tool displays in an iFrame in the current browser window.

  5. Connection information: Your selection is determined by how the learning tool passes credentials through the API for authentication.

    • By domain: Select +Add a domain to enter the Domain, Consumer key, and Shared secret obtained from your LTI provider.

      • Enable Allow XML if your provider advises that you will need to allow XML.

    • Per Link

    • Fixed: Enter the Launch URL, Consumer key, and Shared secret obtained from your LTI provider.

  6. Choose if and when to Send user name, Send user email, and Send user role to the learning tool.

    • Always: The data is always sent.

    • Https Only: The data is only sent if the avenue is secure via a security certificate on the URL.

    • Never: The data is never sent.

  7. Given name: Select which name to use when sending user name.

    • Preferred name, if available: If no preferred name exists for a user, their first name is sent instead.

    • First name, always

  8. Custom Parameters: Enable Allow parameters if your provider supplies them for your learning tool. Select +Add a parameter to enter a Parameter and Value.

  1. After selecting Other provider, select LTI 1.3 tool.

  2. Enter the Provider name and optional Description.

  3. Select the status, Active or Inactive.

  4. Available On: Select the features where the learning tool will be available.

    • Topics: A learning tool content type will be available for teachers to add to their Topics. For more information, see Learning Tools for Topics.

    • Assignments: Enables the learning tool on assignments. With Assignments enabled, Returns Grades is enabled by default and will need to be turned off if grades should not be sent to the learning tool.

      • Select the Default assignment type.

      • Display settings: Choose how the learning tool displays for teachers and students from assignments.

        • Display in new window: The tool launches in a new browser window.

  5. Enter the Launch Url, Login Url, and Public Key Set URL supplied by your tool provider.

  6. Choose if and when to Send user name and Send user email to the learning tool.

    • Always: The data is always sent.

    • Https Only: The data is only sent if the avenue is secure via a security certificate on the URL.

    • Never: The data is never sent.

  7. Give name: Select which name to use when sending user name

    • Preferred name, if available: If no preferred name exists for a user, their first name is sent instead.

    • First name, always

  8. Custom Parameters: Enable Allow parameters if your provider supplies them for your learning tool. Select +Add a parameter to enter a Parameter and Value.

  1. Enter the Provider name and optional Description.

  2. Select Add domain.

  3. Enter the Domain, Consumer key, and Shared secret provided by your SoftChalk vendor.

  4. Under Give name, select which name to use when sending user name:

    • Preferred name, if available: If no preferred name exists for a user, their first name is sent instead.

    • First name, always

  5. Select Save.

You may need to update your learning tool domain credentials if they've expired or changed.

  1. In Learning tools, select the context menu > Edit integration for the provider you need to edit.

  2. Update the Domain, Consumer Key, and Shared Secret with the credentials supplied by your tool provider.

  3. Select Save.

Warning: When the provider's credential type is set to "Per Link", the domain credential list will be hidden by default. If the credential type is changed to "Per Link" and the provider is saved, any domain data will be cleared and deleted.

Platform Managers can view where a learning tool is used by selecting the tool under Provider name. Select Filter to limit the results by School year, Level, and/or Placement type. You can also use Search to find entries for a specific teacher or section.
