Content Types

Content types are used to classify site content. When you create a new web page or import an image, you assign it to a content type. Classifying content ensures that individual items by multiple authors share a consistent structure and the same properties.

There are two classes of content types:

  • Base Content Types - The "out-of-the-box" content types. There are five base types: Web Page, Image, File, XML Document, and Comment. Base content types contain a standard set of property fields which include Title, URL (also called Filename), Author, First Publication Date, Last Publication Date (meaning "most recent"), Description (also used in search results), Body (for Web Page types only), and File (for Image and File types only).

  • Extended Content Types - When you add custom fields such as such as City Name or Media Contact for a Press Release content type, you create an extended content type.

A typical content type includes one or more display templates to define the display of fields and other static content in single and list views of items of this type.

Tip: Because content types are key to organizing a site's content, you should plan what content types and extended content types your site will need before you start building your site.
