Content Filter Properties

Property Description
Label

Enter a unique and meaningful label for this content filter. The label is only seen internally by your administrators, such as an Author selecting a content filter to apply to a list. It is not seen by site visitors. Keep in mind that a content filter is available across the entire website, and may be used in more than one place.

Correct: Press Releases about River Ecology (Press Releases of the category River Ecology)

Incorrect: Filter for list on home page

Content Type

Select from the drop-down menu:

  • <Any type>: This choice puts no restriction on content types used in the filter. You can then filter by Date range or by Folders (folder location). You cannot filter by (content) Categories or Related Items, since both are associated with individual content types.
  • A specific content type in your website such as Web Page or Press Release. The content filter will only include items of that type. Once you select a content type, you can then select from the Categories or Related Items menus, in addition to filtering by Date range or by Folders.

Note: When creating a filter for a List component, it is always recommended that you specify the content type already associated with the component.

Author

Filter the list by:

  • Anyone: Pages authored by both administrators and site visitors
  • Any Admin: Pages authored by administrators only
  • Any Site Visitor: Pages authored by website visitors only. This option is used to list user-generated content (such as stories sent in by constituents). Refer to Enabling Site Visitors to Share Stories, Photos, and More.

Date Range

(Optional) Use these radio buttons to apply a date range to the content items in the group. Usually refers to an item's go-live date, the date of first or last publication to the Web. The associated Date Field menu may also include custom date fields.

Limits list results to items published within a specific date range, either relative (such as within the last 7 days) or fixed (such as on or after July 4, 2007). Relative date ranges can be used wherever filters are applicable, such as when you are filtering items in a List component or configuring an RSS feed. The Date Field menu includes First Published and Last Published, as well as custom date fields for the content type (if any) that you selected.

Select a date range for items to include:

  • None (default): This filter will include no date-range criteria and there will be no date restriction on items.
  • Recent : Specify a relative range of hours, days, weeks, or years for items to include, such as Date within the last [3 Week(s)] or Date within the last [1 Year(s)].
  • Future : Specify a relative range of hours, days, weeks, or years for items to include, such as Date within the next [3 Week(s)]. Note: The item's publication date must be in the future. Choosing First/Last Published from the Date Field menu produces no results: already-published documents are not found.
  • Fixed - Specify a Date on or after [date] , and/or a Date on or before [date].
Folders (Optional) Limits the filter by folder location, to include only items in a specific folder or folders and their subfolders. Use the following procedure: Click Add Folder. Navigate to the folder where the items reside. Highlight the folder, and click Select. Repeat the process to select additional folders. To remove a folder from the Folders list, highlight the folder and click Remove Folder.
Categories

(Optional. Only available if a content type is selected from the Content Type dropdown menu and if that type's Properties step includes at least one category-backed field.)

Limits the filter to items associated with specific content categories. Use the following procedure:

  1. Click Add Category.
  2. Choose a field (such as a content category called Environment).
  3. Select a subcategory (such as River Ecology) of the selected content category. To select more than one, hold down the Shift key.
  4. Repeat if necessary (for instance, if the desired content is associated with more than one content category).
  5. Click OK.
Related Items

(Optional. Only available if a content type is selected from the Content Type dropdown menu and if that type's Properties step contains at least one menu based on related items of different content types.)

Further limits the filter by related items associated with this content type. Use the following procedure:

  1. Click Add Related Item.
  2. Choose a Field (related-item label). The fields are actually items within a set of related items of a particular content type.
  3. Highlight the folder and click Select.
  4. Repeat the process to select additional folders.

To remove a folder from the Folders list, highlight the folder and click Remove Folder.
