Content Indexing for Searches

All text fields in the properties of any content type are indexed every few minutes. This includes whatever a content author enters in a text field in the Properties step for an individual item of that type, such as the title, description and any custom fields such as Teaser or Intro.

Note: The text entered in an item's Description field is used in search indexing and displays by default in search results (unless the search results page is configured not to display that field). Writing a clear and specific Description ensures that it is presented accurately.

The body content of web pages and some binary files (such as Microsoft Office files or PDFs) is also indexed.

Certain kinds of content are not included in public-facing search results, even if the content is indexed or if an item attribute such as title or description matches the search term:

  • Draft or Expired items

  • Images

  • Any of the following low-level assets: XML, CSV, XSL, and JS files

  • Any item that is set in its Properties step to be excluded from public searches.

  • Any item within a restricted-access folder, unless the user running the search is authenticated as a member of a Constituent group with the Reader role.

Note: Google will index the live PageBuilder content for searching in CMS within 24 hours.
