Content filters are a flexible and convenient way to customize lists on Web pages, fields in the Properties step of a content type, and RSS feeds. A content filter is a collection of rules used to select a group of content items; specifically, it defines a dynamic subset of content for lists or menus.

Filters make lists self-sufficient. The list is populated and auto-updated with published items that conform to the list's filter parameters. You can configure a filter to select content from within the same website. (Note that you can still populate lists manually if you wish.)

Content filters are used directly or indirectly in the Filter Criteria component and the List component. A content filter itself may be applied to:

  • A list template - The content filter must be configured to define items of a single content type because it is being used to filter items in a List component (which references a single content type).

  • A drop-down menu of Related Items in a content type Properties step - The content filter can specify items of multiple types.

  • An internal RSS feed

Content filter rules can be applied to the following content item characteristics:

  • Content type

  • Item location by folder

  • Content category

  • Related items

  • Publication date range

  • A combination of the above
