Size and Format of the Import File

Size considerations

For immediate import into the Constituent360 database, the plain text file must not exceed 10 megabytes in size.

For scheduled, recurring imports, the size limit does not apply.

Format considerations

Separate column headers and corresponding data values with commas or tabs. Give the file the extension ".csv" if it is comma-separated, and ".txt" if it is tab-separated.

To create the file, open an application, such as Microsoft Excel, that outputs a CSV file. If you will be using a tab-delimited file, even a software such as Notepad, that generates a text-only file with tab delimiting, will work. Enter the required field headings in the first line. For each line in the file, enter or import the constituent information for the fields you have included.

Tips:

  • If you are using Microsoft Excel, you might be able to use the Get External Data function to import the information from other sources, such as a flat text file. It preserves the leading zeroes in ZIP codes.

  • All data is case sensitive (except for primary_email, which the system interprets as all lowercase letters); that is, if the entry is pat smith (all lower case), the name in the contact record will be in all lower case as well. Save the file as a CSV file if comma-separated. If the content is tab-separated, save it as a TXT file.

  • On a site where the currency is set to GB pounds, do not prepend the pound symbol to currency values.

  • Name the file with descriptive information about the constituents who were uploaded.
