Roles
A role combines tasks and permissions to determine a user's level of access to a feature area in a Blackbaud solution.
Tip: New to security? To understand feature areas, their roles, and how the level of access is determined for a user, see Role-based Security Overview.
You can assign one role to one user for a specific need, and you can also assign one role to multiple users who perform similar tasks. For each role, you can view its name, description, tasks, and permissions.
Note: We recommend you review your roles often to determine whether or not you need adjustments for new or changed tasks and permissions.

From Control panel, Roles, the roles for a feature area appear. Roles are unique to their feature area and can't be shared across multiple areas. We recommend you review them regularly to make sure they are always current for your organization.
Note: If you use multiple Blackbaud solutions, the roles for a feature area appear under their Blackbaud solution.

-
To add a new role for the feature area, select Create role
.
Note: If you use multiple Blackbaud solutions, expand the solution that needs a new role to locate the feature area.
-
When you enter the new role's name and description, make sure the information is clear and concise so all admins can easily identify its purpose when selecting roles for users. Typically, a role name and description matches (or is close to) the user's job title and description.
-
To quickly create a new role based on an existing one, in the Copy role drop down, select the active role to copy. Tasks and permissions from the existing role copy to the new role, but you can update these before you save.
-
To save the new role, select Save.
Note: Roles are unique to their Blackbaud solution and feature area. You cannot share them across multiple solutions and areas. We recommend you review them regularly to make sure they are always current for your organization.

When you add or edit a user, select their role for the feature area, and review the description to confirm it's correct for the user. For more information, see Users.
Note: You can only assign one role per feature area to a user. When a user requires access to an area in multiple Blackbaud solutions, make sure to assign a role for each applicable solution.
