Suppression Criteria
When you use a constituent list to send a message, Raiser's Edge NXT automatically excludes records that meet suppression criteria.
By default, we send messages to the email address that's marked Primary on a constituent's record. To send to a different address type instead, select it under Email address type when you finalize the email. If a record doesn't include the email address type you select, we suppresse the constituent from the message.
Note: Sometimes, a constituent doesn't have an email address marked Primary because their information was entered in database view. In these cases, we send the message to the oldest email address on their record.
When the status of a constituent’s email address is Do not email , we exclude their record from the message. To suppress messages you send through Email
Tip: In the database view, Do not email corresponds to Do not contact (DNC) for the email address on the Bio 1 tab of a constituent’s record.
When a constituent’s record is marked Requests no email, we exclude their record from the message — regardless of the address type you select. To suppress a constituent from all messages you send through Email
Note: We always sends automated messages such as transaction confirmations, even when a constituent's record is marked as Requests no email.
Tip: In the database view, Requests no email is available on the Bio 1 tab of the constituent's record.
If delivery to the constituent’s email address previously failed due to a hard bounce, we exclude the constituent from the message. Hard bounces typically occur when:
-
There’s an error with an email address
-
The account is closed
-
The recipient is unknown to the mailbox provider
For more information, see Hard Bounce Failures.
Note: When an email from Raiser's Edge NXT hard bounces, the status of the constituent's email address doesn't change to Do not email.
Tip: Other Blackbaud solutions — such as Blackbaud Online Express and Blackbaud NetCommunity — don’t suppress email addresses with hard failures if the messages were sent from Raiser's Edge NXT. To suppress hard failures from Raiser's Edge NXT in other solutions, use filter criteria when you create lists.
If a constituent previously reported a message from your organization to their email address as spam, we exclude their record from the message.
Note: When a constituent reports a message from Raiser's Edge NXT as spam, the status of their email address doesn't change to Do not email.
Tip: Other Blackbaud solutions — such as Blackbaud Online Express and Blackbaud NetCommunity — don’t suppress email addresses with SPAM complaints if the messages were sent from Raiser's Edge NXT. To suppress SPAM complaints from Raiser's Edge NXT in other solutions, use filter criteria when you create lists.
If a constituent previously unsubscribed from messages to their email address, we exclude their record from the message. To unsubscribe, constituents can use the opt-out link from one of your messages, or the link that some mailbox providers — including Gmail and Outlook Mail — add to the top of messages.
Note: When a constituent unsubscribes, the status of their email address changes to Do not email .
Note: Raiser's Edge NXT suppresses email addresses for constituents who opt-out of messages you send from Raiser's Edge NXT. To suppress them for constituents who used an email from another Blackbaud email solution — such as Online Express or Blackbaud NetCommunity — to unsubscribe, use filter criteria when you create the list.
Tip: In a future release, recipients will be able to opt-in to receive — or unsubscribe from — messages that match their interests.
We automatically suppresses email addresses for administrative roles, such as webmaster@, hostmaster@, sales@, support@ and postmaster@ because mailbox providers and blocklist companies can use them as spam traps to identify senders who don’t follow best practices. For more information, see Administrative Role Email Addresses.
Note: As a result of these automatic exclusions, when you use a list in Email it may include fewer recipients than the total you see in Lists.
