While the nonprofit sector is very large, around one third of the organizations making up the sector have less than a million dollars in total annual revenue. In fact, 90% of total reported revenue in the sector comes from just 2.39% of the organizations. So while the sheer number and volume of organizations is high, most of the sector’s revenue is concentrated in a very small number of those organizations. The vast majority of giving to nonprofits comes from individuals, and that trend has been true for quite some time. Foundations make up another 17% of giving, and the rest comes from corporations and bequests.
The top four subsector recipients of giving—Religion, Education, Human Services, and Foundations—receive the vast majority of dollars in the sector.
