Stranded Funds Automation

Most donations processed through CSRconnect reach their intended nonprofit on the first attempt (98%). Occasionally, a donation can't be delivered to or deposited by the organization. After multiple attempts to disburse the donation to the intended charity, the donation becomes a stranded fund. The Stranded Funds Automation (SFA) process completes the donation by redirecting the funds to an organization that can receive them.

To learn more about this process, see How Stranded Funds Automation Works.

Note: Stranded Funds Automation is not segmentable.

Why Donations Become Stranded Funds

A donation becomes a stranded fund for one of the following reasons:

  • Stale Check: The nonprofit didn't deposit a check within 120 days and the check is voided.

  • Undeliverable check: The postal service returned the check because it couldn't reach the address on file.

  • State Revoked Charity: The nonprofit appears on the State Revoked Charity list for the donor’s state of residence.

  • Payee returned: The nonprofit returned the payment to Blackbaud.

  • ACH returns: The banking details on file were incorrect or outdated.

  • Charity Note Give Eligible: The charity no longer has 501(c)(3) status and cannot receive donations.

  • Charity is no longer active: The charity has been deactivated in Blackbaud Verified Network.

  • Charity Renewing Vetting: A charity’s vetting has expired.

Notifications

Donors receive weekly digest emails that describe which donations need attention and why.

You can use email exemptions to exclude specific donors from receiving certain SFA email notifications. You can also add an alternate email address to receive the SFA notification emails in lieu of the donor’s email. The alternate contact can use the proxy feature to take action from the donor’s account and resolve the stranded fund.

Reporting

Use the Transactions on Hold Report for a full look at your community's stranded funds, including resolved donations.

SFA fields also appear in the All Giving Report.

Tip: You can view additional SFA reporting from the YourCause Processing Portal.
