Table values for gender and default pronouns

Platform managers configure the available options for gender values and default preferred pronouns.

  1. Select Core.

  2. Select Users.

  3. Select User profile settings.

  4. Select Gender.

  5. View and manage the settings for gender and default pronouns.

    • To create a new gender value, select Add gender. Enter a descriptive value (such as “Non-Binary”) and an abbreviation (such as “N”). Next, select default pronouns (such as They/Their/Theirs). If a gender value should be available for use, mark it Active. Then select Save.

Note: Most integrations handle new gender values the same as Other (O) or Unknown/blank. However, some integrations enable you to configure how gender values should be mapped. See Integration mappings.

    • To update existing values, find the gender value's row and select More . Next, select Edit and enter your changes. If a value is not in use, you can rename it and update the default pronouns. If a value is in use, the abbreviation can't be changed. Then select Save.

Note: The names and abbreviations for Male (M) and Female (F) can’t be edited. This is due to the need to preserve backward compatibility.

    • If a gender value should no longer be used, mark it inactive. To resume using it, mark it active. To do this, find the gender value's row and select More . Next, select Edit. If the value should appear in menus, select Active and then Save.

    • If a gender value is not in use, you can remove it. To do this, find the gender value's row and select More . Next, select Delete and confirm the change.

    • If your school uses a gender value, but doesn't use default pronouns, you can remove the default pronouns. Users can still manually select the pronoun when they add or edit information. However, the value will no longer appear selected by automatic default.

To do this, find the gender value's row and select More. Next, select then Edit and choose the option called --Select--.

Tip: Gender values also appear in Lists as columns and filters. Consider using a filtered list to quickly review which users' profiles may need updated to better reflect their gender, preferred pronouns, and preferred names (formerly “nickname”).

Default values for gender and pronouns

When you enter contact card data for a user, the default pronouns for the selected gender appear automatically selected. Users can manually select different preferred pronouns.

Blackbaud configures the following gender values and preferred pronouns for all new schools.

  • Male (M) is associated with He/Him/His.

  • Female (F) is associated with She/Her/Hers.

  • Other (O) is associated with They/Their/Theirs.

  • Unknown/blank Unknown/blank also exists but isn’t associated with preferred pronouns.

To configure additional options for preferred pronouns, see Table values for pronouns.

Tip: For information about gender and pronouns throughout the application, see Gender. To configure options for pronouns, see Table values for pronouns. To discuss best practices with other schools, visit the Higher Ed user community.
