When Auto-Pay takes your payment

Knowing when Auto-Pay withdraws money helps you keep enough in your account—and tells you how long you have to make a change.

The Auto-Pay timeline

Your payment moves through two stages before the due date:

  • Three days before: The payment is scheduled, and your Upcoming Auto-pay notification is sent. Its status reads Scheduled.

  • One day before: The payment begins processing. Its status reads Processing.

For example, if your installment date is the 15th of the month, the payment is scheduled on the 12th and begins processing on the 14th.

Tip: Treat the notification as your deadline. Once it arrives, your options are limited.

Check where your next payment stands

To find out which stage your payment has reached, check the Auto-Pay summary on your Current bill. It confirms the enrollment for each student, such as Miles is enrolled in auto-pay, and gives the date of the next scheduled payment.

As that date nears, the summary reports the stage the payment has reached:

Scheduled The payment has been handed off to be collected on the date shown.
Processing The payment is being collected now.

Until the payment is handed off, no status appears—only the enrollment and the date it is due to run.

Only the Auto-Pay plans you actually have are listed, so a student enrolled for a payment plan but not for incidentals shows only the payment plan. If no student you are responsible for is enrolled, the summary does not appear at all.

What you can still change

Once a payment is scheduled, most changes no longer affect it. Two things still work: you can pause Auto-Pay at any point, and you can correct the details of the payment method you are already using.

Action Before Payment is Scheduled After Payment is Scheduled
Pause auto-pay Yes Yes
Update payment method (e.g., switch from direct debit to credit card) Yes No
Update payment details (e.g., update bank or card info) Yes Yes
Make a manual payment to affect auto-pay amount Yes No
Sign up for auto-pay Yes No

Note: The two payment method rows mean different things. Update payment method is switching to a different card or account, which a scheduled payment will not pick up. Update payment details is correcting the information on the method you are already using, such as a reissued card number, and that does apply to a scheduled payment.
