Pause, Start, or End Recurring Gift Payments

You can temporarily or permanently end future payments for a recurring gift, or restart payments. Recurring gifts that are processing payments have an Active gift status.

Pause recurring gift payments

From the recurring gift record, you can temporarily pause payments for the donor with one of the following options:

  • On hold to pause payments indefinitely. For example, if payments are failing, you may want to place the gift on hold until you are able to resolve the situation with the donor.

  • Skip next payments to pause payments for a specific amount of time if the recurring gifts automatically process. For example, a donor contacts your organization because they are unable to pay some of the upcoming payments. To learn which payments you can skip, see Skip Automatic Recurring Gift Payments.

Note: Skipping payments cannot be undone, and after you skip the payments, the recurring gift status continues to be Active. However, you can put the gift on hold, terminate or complete it.

End recurring gift payments

From the recurring gift record, you can permanently end future payments for a donor with one of the following options:

  • Terminated to stop payments. For example, if payments are failing and you are unable to resolve the issue with the donor, you may want to terminate the recurring gift.

  • Completed to stop payments. If a recurring gift has an end date, it will automatically be completed. However, if there’s no end date or the donor contacts your organization to complete the gift, you can mark it as completed.

Warning: After a recurring gift's status is set to Completed or Terminated, it can't be changed back to Active.

To learn more about statuses, see Recurring Gift Status.
