Quick Add Assignments

Teachers add new assignments, assessments, and graded discussions, as well as copy or import existing assignments from the Assignment Center or the Assignments tab on their class pages. Once students have submitted an assignment, teachers evaluate student performance and provide feedback through their Gradebooks and the Assignment details page.

Assignment Creation Preferences

Teachers can speed up the assignment creation process by setting their assignment creation defaults to best fit their needs in Preferences.

  1. In Faculty,

    Select  My Day, then Assignment Center.

    OR

    Select Classes, choose a class, then select Assignments.

  2. In list view, select More, then Preferences. In calendar view, select Preferences just above the calendar.

  3. On the Assignment creation tab, set the following preferences:

    • Add to gradebook default: Selected or unselected.

    • Add to cumulative grade default: Selected or unselected.

    • Publish grade default: Selected or unselected.

    • Assignment notification: Selected or unselected.

    • File submission: Choose No assignment submission, In-system submission, or On paper submission only.

    • Evaluation method: Choose Total points, Mastery, or Mastery and total points.

      Note: Evaluation method default is only available if your school uses Competency Based Education (CBE).

    • Due date and times: Base due dates and times off of class meetings or manually specify due dates and times.

Add an assignment

Teachers can add assignments from multiple areas.

  1. In Faculty, select  My Day, then Assignment Center.

  2. In list view, select +Add, then Quick assignment. In calendar view, select +Quick assignment.

  1. In Faculty, select Classes, then choose a class.

  2. Select the Assignments tab.

  3. In list view, select +Add, then Quick assignment. In calendar view, select +Quick assignment.

  1. In Faculty, select Classes, then choose a class.

  2. Select Launch gradebook.

  3. Select +Add, then Quick assignment.

Basic setup

Basic setup includes the most frequently used and required assignment settings.

  1. Under Details, enter the assignment Title and optional Description.

  2. Choose an Assignment type.

    Tip: (GB) at the end of an assignment type indicates it is included in your gradebook calculation.

  3. To attach a file, select Attach file to browse your computer or device for a file to upload.

    Tip: To use a different file name, you must update the file name before uploading.

  4. If your school utilizes the Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive integrations,integration, you can select Attach files from Google Drive or Attach files from OneDrive to browse your Google Drive or OneDrive files to upload to the assignment.

  5. To add a link to the assignment, select Add link. Enter a Description and URL, then select Apply.

Section

  • When you create an assignment from a class section or gradebook, all class sections of that course that you teach are automatically selected.

  • When you create an assignment from the Assignment Center or your main Calendar page, all current class sections you teach are available for selection. You must mark the checkbox for each class that will share this assignment.

  • To add additional class sections that are not listed, use Select sections to choose additional classes.

Assigned and Due

Set the Assigned and Due dates and times for each class section individually. Or select Bulk-edit selected to set the Assigned and Due dates and times for all selected class sections at once.

Due date

  • Next meeting: the assignment is due the next time the class meets after the Assigned date and time.

  • Specific date: Select the calendar icon to chose a date. A red dot indicates which days a class meets.

Due time

  • Start of class: Starting time of the next class meeting.

  • End of class: End time of the next class meeting.

  • Specific time: Select the clock icon to choose a time.

Note: Specific date and Specific time are automatically selected if a class has no meetings.

Assigned to

By default, an assignment is assigned the Full section of students in each selected class.

  1. Under Assigned to, select the Edit icon next to Full section.

  2. Mark Selected students.

  3. Select the students you want to assign the assignment to.

  4. Select Save.

Publish

Select when the assignment is visible to students. Teachers can edit assignments even if they are published to students.

  • Now: immediately visible to students.

  • Assigned date: visible beginning on the assigned date and time.

  • No: not visible.

Warning: Online submissions will be lost if an assignment with online submissions enabled is unpublished and then republished.

  1. Under Evaluation, select Add to gradebook if the assignment should be included in your gradebook.

  2. To evaluate student performance on the assignment with a rubric, select +Rubric, choose the rubric you want to use, then select Apply. You can view the details for a rubric by selecting the rubric link once it has been added to the assignment.

    Note: The option to use a rubric is only available if you have added at least one rubric to your Rubric bank. Selecting a rubric fills in the Max points for the assignment. For more information, see Rubrics.

  3. Enter the Max points, which must be greater than 0.

  4. To publish the assignment grade to students and parents, select Publish grade.

  5. To include the assignment grade in the cumulative grade calculation for the class, select Add to cumulative grade.

If your school uses Competency Based Education (CBE), additional evaluation Methods are available when creating assignments:

  • Total points: No additional information is required beyond the Evaluation information above.

  • Mastery

  • Mastery and total points

If Mastery only or Mastery and total points is selected, complete these additional setup steps under Evaluation:

  • Formative: Enable if the assignment is Formative and should not be included in the Mastery calculation.

  • Courses: Use the edit icon next to None found to associate at least one course with the assignment. Only the skills associated with all selected courses are available under Skills to evaluate.

    Note: The current course is already selected when adding an assignment from the class Assignments tab or the class gradebook.

  • Skills to evaluate: Add Content-area and/or Transferable skills to the assignment.

Note: If your school uses Competency Based Education (CBE), we recommend using our Teacher's Guide to Competency Based Education to create your Mastery assignments.

Select how students "turn in" the assignment.

Select the Submission type: 

  • No assignment submission: Students do not turn in an online or paper submission for the assignment.

    • Your administrator determines which status is applied to assignments that do not require a submission when the due date and time passes - Complete, Overdue, or To do.

  • On paper submission only: Students may only turn in a hard copy of the assignment.

    • When the due date passes, the assignment status automatically updates to "Overdue" until the assignment is graded or marked as "Collected".

    Tip: If students can choose between submitting their assignment on paper or uploading an in-system file submission, choose In-system submission.

  • In-system submission: Students upload a file submission for the assignment.

    • Select the Number of submitted files allowed per student.

    • Select Allow resubmit until due date if students should be able to resubmit files for the assignment.

    • If your school uses the Google Drive integration, you can specify the file types allowed for submission.

    Tip: Teachers can annotate files their students submit. For more information, see Assignment Annotations.

    Note: Many file types are supported. For more information, see Supported File Types, Embed, iFrame & Script Code

  • Turnitin LTI 1.1: If applicable, students submit their assignment through Turnitin.

Advanced settings

Abbreviation (optional): In your gradebook settings, you can choose to display assignment titles or abbreviations. By default, the first 5 characters of your assignment Title are added as the Abbreviation upon saving an assignment if the no abbreviation is entered.

Mark as extra credit: Enable if the assignment should count as extra credit.

Note: Extra credit assignments will not negatively impact a student's grade. Any extra credit points awarded are included in cumulative grade calculations. For more information, see Extra Credit.

Assignment factor: Defaults to 1. Factor references the number of times an assignment is counted in the grade calculation. For example, in a Total points calculation, an assignment has a factor of 2, in the calculation, the points earned and max points for the assignment are both multiplied by 2.

Enable Send notification to send an Assignment added notification when the assignment is saved. Users must subscribe to the Assignment added notification to receive it.

If your school has enabled any LTI 1.1 learning tool providers, you can select an Associated learning tool to use with the assignment. Once the provider tool is selected, fill in any additional fields if needed.

By default, Single instance of this assignment is selected.

Creating multiple instances of an assignment is helpful if you need to create a recurring assignment, such as a daily reading assignment or weekly vocabulary quiz. When creating multiple instances of an assignment, you will set the assigned and due dates and times here under Assignment instances instead of under Publishing options. While creating multiple instances, you can select View/edit instances to edit the assigned and due dates and times for each instance as needed before saving. After saving and creating the assignments, you can edit individual instances as needed.

  1. Select Multiple instances of this assignment.

  2. Under Date range, select the From and To dates when the assignment instances will occur.

  3. Under Due, select the day or days of the week the assignment instances are due.

  4. Under Assigned, select Assigned on date due if each instance is assigned on the same date that it is due. Or select Assigned before due date and enter the number of Days before due date that the instances are assigned.

  5. Enter the Time assigned.

  6. Select View/edit instances to review all instances of the assignment that will be created. Update the Assigned or Due dates and times for each instance as needed, then select Apply.

  7. When finished, select Save or Save and add another.
